What Is Housing Choice Partners?
Housing Choice Partners (HCP) is a not-for-profit organization. HCP works with area Housing Authority’s to offer voucher families a wide range of housing choices throughout the metropolitan Chicago region. HCP is an addition to the regular voucher program and working with HCP is a choice. Clients are encouraged to consider areas that may offer more educational opportunity for children. What about more choice with regard to employment for you? And what about an apartment in a neighborhood where crime is not an issue? All of these things are possible with some effort on your part and some, assistance on ours.HCP teaches its clients search skills and/or provides units for consideration. HCP will assist in visiting a complex, negotiating with a landlord, processing papers, and making referrals to various support services once a move is made. HCP keeps in touch with families and helps them to keep in touch with each other. This program is designed to help voucher families learn new skills and move to areas that they may never have considered or thought possible, outside of areas that have substantial numbers of poor and minority families and often large numbers of voucher families already. These areas may experience signs of disinvestment and deterioration, especially regarding the job base. A new area may offer new opportunities that can help your family improve its current situation. What Is The Process?
The program will be explained to you. We want families to understand what HCP can do and what families must do for themselves. We will distribute a packet of information and it’s then up to you to say; “yes, I’d like to consider a move to a new area!” An assessment will then be scheduled. The purpose is to discuss your family’s needs and desires and to answer any questions you may have., HCP will assist in putting together a file for a prospective landlord that will include personal and business references, a credit check, a landlord reference and a letter from HCP. We can help choose a few new places to call or visit to get the process started.
During the search process, HCP will keep in touch. It is up to you to return phone calls promptly because often if a unit is available, it will not be available for long. We are happy to help with any landlord or transportation issues and we will try to assist with any money management problems you might have. Once you find a unit, we will assist in processing your paperwork, arranging for a security deposit as well as a moving van, so you can move as quickly and as easily as possible.
Once you move, HCP will make referrals for any services needed including assistance with employment, training, child care, transportation, community services, etc. You can also expect to meet with other families in your area to help each other with any issues that may have come up since your move.
