HCP administers the State of Illinois’ rental subsidy program, the Rental Housing Support Program, in suburban Cook County. The program subsidizes about 70 rental units in the north, west and south suburbs and makes the units available to those who have incomes <30% of the Area Median Income. In 2010 the maximum income for a family of four is $22,620. The tenant pays a flat rent to the landlord (about 30% of their income) and HCP pays the difference between that and the market rent of the unit.
Tenants come from a wait list that HCP developed through a one-day telephone registration when the program began, in 2007. HCP expects to do another one-day telephone registration during 2010. Check back on this web-site for a date for the telephone registration.
Landlords are identified for the program through outreach and an application process which includes a background check to be sure there are no housing code violations or other negative factors that might disqualify him/her for the program. Landlords can apply for the program by calling Medina Johnson at extension 229.
